External spur gears are used to transmit power and motion between parallel shafts and are, by far, the most common type of gear used in the largest number of applications. The have teeth that are both straight and parallel to the axis of rotation and are usually produced from cylindrical gear blanks. The involute profile of spur gear teeth allows for smooth operation between mating gears and permits greater variations in mounting distances without affecting proper gear action.
External splines typically have teeth cut on the outside diameter of a drive shaft parallel to the axis of shaft rotation. The teeth of splines may be of various forms including involute, crowned, parallel, or serrated. Shafts with external splines typically mate with components having internal splines to transmit torque and motion in the same axis.
